Royal Hobart Hospital

About Project

Multi Carrier In Building Cellular Distribution System for the Royal Hobart Hospital in Tasmania.

BUSINESS NEED

The hospital is run by the Tasmanian Government as part of the Department of Health and Human Services and is the largest hospital, and the largest employer, in Tasmania. The hospital provides services for all of southern Tasmania and has capacity for 400 patients. Many statewide services such as cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery, major trauma, high-risk obstetrics, hyperbaric medicine, and neonatal intensive care are based at the hospital, with referrals coming in from the north and northwest.

THE CHALLENGE: Royal Hobart Hospital is like many large structures, it has little to no cellular coverage throughout the building. Without solid connection to the cellular networks essential hospital staff are unable to reached when most required.

SOLUTION

Implement Sigtel Smart Signal Booster Solutions alongside Parabolic Grid High Gain Antennas, and ceiling mounted omni access antenna with Reflectors. The results of installation achieved high-quality cellular reception for all carriers in designated areas, maintained external building façade by using small form antennas, and insured consistent mobile communication capabilities to support the continued operation of Tasmania’s largest hospital.

FINDING THE RIGHT SOLUTION

RHH procurement reached out to communications expert David Crawford, from SigTel Group, to find out how to improve mobile coverage within the hospital wards as well as the lifts throughout the hostipal. He recommended a multi-carrier solution be installed throughout. RHH selected SigTel Group after an extensive review of the product, as well as other solutions on the market. The SigTel Group team then worked alongside RHH Facility Manager to plan the installation. First, they tested all the antennas to determine the optimal position to gain the best outcome in boosting capacity. Then, the team of four installers focused on providing coverage in the wards and lift areas of the building. In two week, the building had coverage.

SUPPORTING HEALTHCARE ORGANIZATION

Not only does RHH have a state-of-the-art women,s and Children’s precinct, cancer service, intensive care unit, the organization can now also communicate via mobile with colleagues within the building, as well as external specialist teams. This collaboration will help to accelerate the hospitals care giving abilities.
